Case Study: Right-of-Way Management/Tree Management with the Marshall Tree Saw

Client: Richard Johnstone - V.P. Connectiv

Purpose: Right-of-Way Vegetation Management

Use: Vegetation Management for new 230k V Right-of-Way in Oyster-Cedar, NJ.

...We followed behind the right-of-way clearing crews this summer and removed the stumps with the Marshall Tree Saw from below the ground level. This gave the line crews ready access as needed. Cutting below the root collar removed the buds that are activated when a tree top is removed, thus there is no re-sprouting. This eliminates the need for mowing or broadcast herbicide treatment as follow-up. As a new best right-of-way vegetation management practice, this could immediately allow us to manage for compatible low growing plants with only spot selective herbicide treatment by backpacks ... The one picture shows only one oak tree sprouting that was missed by the saw and it is about 2 feet tall...

Right-of-way Cleared by Marshall Tree Saw

Only One Small Oak Remained

The Marshall Tree Saw has multiple benefits to right-of-way vegetation management:
  • Clears 60,000 - 80,000 square feet per day.
  • Push, pile and stack vegetation without changing equipment
  • Cut to vegetation to a manageable length
  • The Marshall Tree Saw decreases safety hazards by operating at a slower speed for more controlled cut and generating no heat or sparks.
    • A-frame design deflects trees and debris.
  • Increase vegetation management productivity by 100% vs manual clearing and 50% vs. shears/saws.
  • Provides access to difficult to reach vegetation without additional equipment
  • Below-ground cutting eliminates stumps and provides easy access for other equipment
  • Reduces re-growth and extends roadside vegetation maintenance cycles by cutting at or below ground level.
    • Optional chemical application retards growth of right-of-way vegetation
    • Reduces sprouting and re-growth of right-of-way vegetation by cutting below the root collar
  • Promotes environmental stewardship by allowing selective cutting without destruction of the habitat and reduced contamination through the non-use of bar chain oil.
